Stretta Procedure

Stretta is a non-surgical procedure designed to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), a condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the oesophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, and sometimes more severe complications. Stretta is an alternative treatment option for patients who are not adequately relieved by medications or who wish to avoid surgery.

Understanding GERD and Why Stretta Might Be Needed

GERD occurs when the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES – a ring of muscle at the junction of the oesophagus and stomach) fails to close properly, allowing acid to escape from the stomach into the oesophagus. This reflux can cause significant discomfort, damage to the oesophageal lining, increase the risk of conditions like oesophagitis and Barrett’s oesophagus.

While many patients manage GORD with lifestyle changes and medications like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), these treatments do not work for everyone. Some patients continue to experience symptoms despite taking medication, or they may prefer to avoid the long-term use of drugs due to potential side effects. For these patients, Stretta offers a less invasive alternative to traditional anti-reflux surgery.

What is the Stretta Procedure?

Stretta is a non-surgical, outpatient procedure that uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to treat GORD. It works by delivering controlled RF energy to the muscles of the LOS and the upper part of the stomach, known as the gastric cardia. This energy stimulates the muscles, causing them to thicken and strengthen over time, which improves the function of the LOS and reduces reflux.

Here’s how the Stretta procedure is typically performed:

Preperation

Mr Allenby-Smith performs the procedure under general anaesthetic, the anaesthetist will see you before the procedure to explain more.

Procedure

A flexible tube called an endoscope is passed through your mouth and down into your oesophagus. The endoscope is equipped with a device that delivers RF energy to the LES and gastric cardia. The RF energy heats the tissue in a controlled manner, creating small, precise lesions in the muscle. These lesions stimulate the body’s natural healing process, leading to the thickening of the muscle tissue over time.

Completion

The procedure typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Afterward, you’ll be monitored for a short time before being allowed to go home. Since Stretta is a minimally invasive procedure, recovery is usually quick, and most patients can resume normal activities within a day or two.

Benefits of Stretta

Stretta offers several advantages, particularly for patients who are not ideal candidates for surgery or who prefer a less invasive treatment option:

Minimally Invasive

Stretta does not require any incisions or major surgery. The procedure is performed using an endoscope, which reduces the risk of complications and allows for a quicker recovery.

Effective Symptom Relief

Many patients experience significant improvement in their GORD symptoms after the Stretta procedure. Some are able to reduce or eliminate their need for GORD medications.

Outpatient Procedure

Stretta is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day and return to your normal routine quickly.

Recovery After Surgery

After Stretta, you may experience a sore throat or mild discomfort, but these symptoms usually resolve within a few days. Mr Allenby-Smith will provide specific instructions regarding diet and activity, but most patients can return to their regular activities within a day or two.

It’s important to follow your doctor’s recommendations, which may include temporary dietary restrictions to ensure proper healing. Over time, the LOS muscles will continue to strengthen, leading to a gradual reduction in reflux symptoms.

Life After Stretta

Stretta can provide long-lasting relief from GORD symptoms for many patients, significantly improving their quality of life. While some patients may still need to take GORD medications, most find that their symptoms are much better controlled after the procedure. Additionally, because Stretta is a minimally invasive treatment, the risks are lower compared to traditional surgical options.

In conclusion, Stretta is a safe and effective option for patients with GORD who seek an alternative to medication or surgery. It offers a minimally invasive approach to improving LOS function and reducing acid reflux, allowing patients to enjoy a better quality of life.
